This oven baked BBQ chicken is coated in a rich homemade barbecue sauce that’s sweet, smoky, tangy, and full of classic comfort food flavor. As it bakes, the sauce caramelizes into a sticky glaze that keeps the chicken tender, juicy, and packed with flavor in every bite. While it’s perfect for oven baked chicken, this homemade BBQ sauce is also delicious brushed on ribs, burgers, pulled pork, grilled chicken, or even used as a dipping sauce for fries and chicken tenders.

1 cup ketchup
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 tbsp honey
2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp yellow mustard
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp smoked paprika
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/2 tsp salt
Directions
- Preheat oven to 400°F.
Pat chicken dry and place in a lightly greased baking dish or sheet pan.
Drizzle with olive oil and season generously with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and smoked paprika.
Bake the whole chicken uncovered at 400°F for about 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes.
After the first 40 minutes, remove from the oven and brush generously with the BBQ sauce mixture.
Return to the oven and continue baking, brushing with more sauce once or twice during cooking.
During the last 5–10 minutes, brush with an extra layer of sauce and broil lightly for sticky caramelized edges.
The chicken is done when the internal temperature reaches 165°F in the thickest part of the thigh.
Let rest 5–10 minutes before serving.
Cooking times may vary depending on your oven and the size of your chicken, so always use cook times as a guide. If the chicken is browning too quickly, lightly cover with foil and continue cooking until the internal temperature reaches 165°F in the thickest part of the thigh.
