turkey FAQs
IF I ORDER A TURKEY IN A SIZE RANGE - HOW BIG WILL THE TURKEY BE THAT I RECEIVE?
We sell our turkeys in a size range (for instance, 14-16 lbs) because it is difficult to raise the turkeys to exact weights. We guarantee that your turkey will be within the size range you purchase. If you are concerned that you may need a bigger turkey, we recommend choosing the next larger size.
DO YOU INCLUDE COOKING INSTRUCTIONS?
We always include our turkey cooking tips and instructions with every turkey. Want to get a sneak peak? Click here
HOW BIG A TURKEY SHOULD I ORDER?
We recommend a 10-13 lb turkey for 4-8, a 14-16 lb turkey for 8-10, and a 17-20 lb turkey for 10-14. And, of course, you'll want to factor in leftovers!
WHEN WILL MY TURKEY BE DELIVERED?
We will be shipping turkeys the week of Nov. 18. Turkeys will arrive no later than Saturday, Nov. 23. When your turkey ships, you will receive an email notification with a tracking number. You do not need to be home when your turkey is delivered.
WHAT BREED ARE THE TURKEYS?
Our turkey breed is called “Sonoma Valley Classic" (also known as Midget White). These are smaller, slower-growing birds than the industrial broad-breasted breeds, and they produce exceedingly juicy meat.
WHAT ARE THE TURKEYS FED?
Our turkeys are fed a vegetarian diet of grains and soy - and no animal byproducts.
ARE THE TURKEYS ORGANIC?
Our turkeys from Stonewood Farm in Vermont are not "certified" organic.
WHY ARE YOUR TURKEYS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THE SUPERMARKET?
Turkeys in the supermarket - especially around Thanksgiving - are priced artificially low - as a loss leader - by many supermarkets. Our turkeys are fairly priced when you take into consideration the cost of raising them, the feed required, and the processing cost. On average, the price of our turkeys comes out to $9-10 per pound. Of course, there's a world of difference between the quality, nutrition, and humane conditions of our turkeys versus supermarket turkeys, not to mention the taste.
DO THE TURKEYS COME WITH GIBLETS?
Yes they do! Make sure you remove them from the turkey cavity before you cook your turkey. However unpromising the giblets look, they make a wonderful stock for turkey gravy and the meat from them will provide a Thanksgiving treat for a deserving cat or dog.
DO THE TURKEYS RECEIVE ANTIBIOTICS OR GROWTH HORMONES?
Our turkeys do not receive antibiotics or growth hormones.
IF I WANT TO RECEIVE MY TURKEY ON A DIFFERENT WEEK, HOW CAN I ARRANGE THAT?
If you would like to receive your turkey at a time other than the week of Nov. 18, go ahead and place your order. When you receive your order confirmation, please send us an email with your order number and your desired delivery date. Send to FARMERDAN@HEARTSTONEFARM.ME.
WHERE DO YOU SHIP?
We ship our turkeys to 15 states: CT, DE, DC, ME, MA, MD, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, VA, VT, WV.
CAN I PICK UP MY TURKEY?
Unfortunately, we no longer have the ability to have customers pick up orders.
