how we raise our beef

By Farmer Dan

We raise our cattle the way nature intended - just as it’s been done for generations here in New England

At Heartstone Farm, we take great pride in providing the best-tasting, beef you've ever had. Our process, which we call "New England Traditional", ensures the highest quality, flavor, and nutrition, while maintaining humane and sustainable farming practices. This method reflects the time-honored practices of farms throughout our region.

1. Pasture-Raised:

Our cattle start their lives on lush, open pastures where they graze freely. This natural environment allows them to roam, exercise, and forage, leading to healthier and happier animals. The pasture diet is rich in a variety of grasses and plants, which contributes to the distinct, rich flavor of our beef.

2. Grain and Forage-Finished:

In keeping with the New England Traditional method, our cattle transition to a combined diet of forage and grain in the final stages of their growth. This diet, primarily consisting of corn silage, is crucial for several reasons:

- Enhanced Marbling:The grain portion of the diet helps to enhance the marbling of the meat, which results in a more tender and flavorful product.

- Consistency: Including grain in the cattle diet ensures a consistent quality and taste that our customers have come to expect and love.

- Nutrition: In the last 3-6 months of their growth, cattle require high-carbohydrate and protein in their diet. Corn silage provides essential nutrients that support the health and well-being of our cattle during the finishing phase. Unlike feedlots, the grain never exceeds 25% of the feed.

3. Humane and Sustainable Practices:

Throughout their lives, our cattle are treated with the utmost care and respect. We adhere to strict humane practices to ensure their well-being. During the grazing season, our cattle are on pasture. Additionally, our farming methods are designed to be regenerative and sustainable, minimizing environmental impact and promoting long-term agricultural health.

4. No antibiotics, growth hormones, or mRNA vaccines

We do not use antibiotics, growth hormones, or mRNA vaccines on our cattle. Ever.

5. We work with small, local family-farms

All of our cattle are born and spend their lives in the Northeast United States. Heartstone Farm beef are grown on our farm, and on small family farms that we work with in the Northeast. To meet our “Approved by Farmer Dan” standards, our partner farms must adhere to our standards. We visit and work with these farms to insure that our customers can trust Heartstone Farm beef.

6. Transparency and Trust:

We believe in being transparent about our farming practices. From pasture to plate, we are committed to providing beef that you can trust, knowing that it was raised with care, quality, and integrity.
